Introduction

1979 Indiana State Sycamores Team Signed Basketball. The season before Larry Bird first played for Indiana State, 1975-76, the Sycamores went 13-12. In his three seasons varsity seasons in Terre Haute, 1976-79, the team went 25-3, 23-9 and 33-1, and Bird earned three All-America selections and the national college player of the year award.

Without Bird in 1978-79, Indiana State would have been a a .500 team at best. With Bird, the Sycamores were the second best team in the country. He was that good and he meant everything to that team. The undefeated Cinderella Sycamores would make it all the way to the national championship game and a date with destiny. There, Larry Bird and Earvin “Magic” Johnson would co-author what is considered by many to be the greatest college basketball game of all-time. The Michigan State Spartans and Magic ultimately prevailed in a contest which achieved the highest-ever television rating for a college basketball game.

Here we present a signed basketball courtesy of the ultimate Cinderella basketball team. It is the first such exemplar we have ever offered. Wilson outdoor basketball is signed by fourteen Sycamores (the entire team), including Larry Bird, Bob Heaton, Brad Miley, Carl Nicks, Alex Gilbert, Leroy Staley, Steve Reed, Rich Nemcek, Scott Turner, Tom Crowder, Bob Ritter, Eric Curry, Rod McNelly and one other (possibly a red shirt player).
