Rare 1952 Mel Ott Signed Autographed Christy Walsh Postcard W/ Address PSA DNA

Introduction

During the 1950s Christy Walsh, who was head of a national writing syndicate, not to mention the former business agent of Babe Ruth, produced an annual series of sports calendars, which were manufactured and distributed by Brown & Bigelow. Naturally, Walsh needed the permission of the various athletes that would be featured on each year’s calendar. To that end, he routinely sent out preprinted consent forms on the back of self-addressed government postcards, which the players would sign and date, then mail back to him. Offered here is one of those consent postcards, dated May 15, 1952, signed and filled out by Hall of Fame outfielder Mel Ott. The text reads, in part, “This will authorize Christy Walsh to use my name and picture with other pictures to appear on Sports Calendar which he is producing.” Ott has flawlessly signed the card in blue ink (grading “10”) on the appropriate line, with both his address and the date also having been filled out in his hand. Ott, a member of baseball’s elite 500 Home Run club, was manager of Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League at the time of this card’s signing. Ott passed away just three years later as a result of a car accident, resulting in the scarcity of his signature today. The card (5.25 x 3 inches), which is postmarked “May 15, 1952,” remains in Excellent condition. Encapsulated and authenticated by PSA DNA.
